This Is Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio # 1026

Living after midnight.

Maybe Judas Priest wouldn’t be among the first acts to come to mind when thinking about This Is Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio with Dana & Carl. It’s true that we very rarely play any Judas Priest on the show (though I have been known to seriously crank the Priest’s “Living After Midnight” and [especially] “Heading Out To The Highway” whenever the iPod in my car shuffles in that direction). And an embrace of the phrase “living after midnight” would seem odd for a radio show that packs up and exclaims sayonara when the witching hour tolls.

Nonetheless, it feels right. Living after midnight. I was a night owl for most of my life, staying up as late as I could to write, read, draw, watch TV, listen to the radio, and–as I entered my late teens and beyond–to see bands play, to party and carouse, to prance, dance, and make romance. And still also to write, read, draw, watch TV, and listen to the radio. I would gladly sleep through the morning in exchange for living after midnight.

I don’t stay up as late as I used to. I’m rarely in bed before midnight, but not usually up for much longer after the clock strikes twelve. I’m older now, and that’s fine. My body honors the demands of the physical world. In my head, I’m still living after midnight.

This week’s show included The Donnas‘ struttin’ 2001 cover of Judas Priest’s “Living After Midnight,” as well as new music from The Vapour TrailsDana Countryman, and Tom Curless & the 46 %, the TIRnRR debut of Juniper, an exciting backing-tracks-only cut by The Kinks, another lost 1966 Motown track by The Mynah Birds, and so many more luxurious examples of the both the bright and the dark nocturnal music we hear all day and all of the night. Whatever the time of day, it’s midnight. And we feel alive. This is what rock ‘n’ roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
