This Is Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio # 1047
Nearly twenty-two years into this silly notion of The Best Three Hours Of Radio On The Whole Friggin’ Planet, and I still think we live up to our own clueless hype.
It shouldn’t be true. We should be tired of this by now, just going through the motions, desperately scratching to maintain an illusion of relevance. Furthermore, being forced to program the show via remote in this time of quarantine ought to have been the killing stroke to our delusion of rock ‘n’ roll adequacy.
But it wasn’t. Honest to God, I look at each week’s playlist and exclaim, We did THAT?! Holy mother of Alan Freed, that’s…pretty good! Even locked out of the studio, assembling the show from our separate and secure locations, TIRnRR keeps a-boppin’, undaunted, unafraid. Some might add “unaware” and “oblivious” to that litany, but we don’t mind. We’re doing the radio show we’ve always wanted to do, the radio show we’ve always wanted to hear. Clueless? Yes, absolutely. It’s okay; we know what we’re doing even if we don’t understand what we’re doing. We’re playing records on the radio. That remains its own best reward. It renews itself. It redeems itself. It makes me proud, and it makes me smile. Playing records on the radio. I can’t wait to see what we play next week.
But first: this week! And this is what rock ‘n’ roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
